Surfing for Beginners in Dulag Leyte (Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp)

Sabang Daguitan Surf camp dulag leyte, surfing, sea, water
Surfing (on sand) for pictorial purposes haha (I wasn't able to bring my action cam kasi)

I always have this thought that I can never do surfing because I'm not confident enough to swim in an open water. However, that idea changed when I went to Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp in Dulag Leyte last January. I went there with my family and a friend just to have a chill day with the sea breeze -- no plans of surfing whatsoever, but in the end, I did it anyway!

It started when I saw some young adults doing it and it looks kinda fun. I had a chance to talk to one of them and he encouraged me to try it (I forgot his name but he was a PT student from Cebu Doctors). He assured me that the water isn't so deep so it's perfectly okay if I don't know how to swim. Just for the record, I really know how to swim but I'm just super scared if the water is too deep.

Anyway, after asking the surf coaches about how deep the water is for like the nth time, I finally decided to do it. I paid 500 pesos - that's 250 for the surf coach and 250 for the surf board rental. This is all good for 1 hour but it could take longer than that since the coach will not include the time waiting for the waves and some rest times.

So there I was, struggling to find a good balance with the surf board on every wave. I managed to stand up but twice only. After so many tries, I was having a strained neck. It's because of the prone position on the surf board while waiting for the waves. I realized that surfing is not for everyone haha. But I know how fun it is. Maybe me and my body wasn't just ready at that time. I will try it again next time but I'll make sure to exercise first few days before so I can handle my body better.

How to get to Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp from Tacloban

  1. From Tacloban New bus terminal or the van terminal at the back of Savemore, you can ride a PUV going to Lapaz or Mayorga, tell the driver that you intend to go to Sabang Daguitan Surf Camp. If you see Andoks, that means you're already near. Wait until you pass by Daguitan bridge. The drop off point is just beside this bridge.
  2. Wait for a habal-habal that can take you to the Surf Camp directly. In this area, there are lesser vehicles passing by so another option would be getting off at Andoks and from there you can see many habal-habal drivers that can take you to the Surf Camp.
Here's a summary of the usual expenses:

📌 Entrance Fee - P20
📌 Surf board rental - P250/hr
📌 Surf coach - P250/hr
📌 Cottage - minimum of P500

And some relevant information:

📌 Delicious food is available in their restaurant - it's a must try
📌 Business hours: 6am to 10pm everyday
📌 Can stay overnight for only P1000 (no AC but good for 4 pax)
📌 Best time to surf here - BER months until Febuary

For those who would like to try surfing (especially those who are in Tacloban or Leyte), this is the best place to start! Not knowing how to swim wouldn't be a problem. I'm only 5 feet tall and the water level was just below my neck.

If you just want to chill in a floating cottage or do kayaking, you can go to Dao Balay Kawilan, which is just beside the surf camp about 800 meters away. It's a peaceful, serene place. Cottage fee is from P400 to P1,500 and kayak rental is 200/hr.

*Kudos again to Ms. Gina Lopez and Bantay Kalikasan for helping the locals here. My surf coach told me that the surf boards were donated by Ms. Gina Lopez and now they're making a living out of it.
